The theme for the upcoming International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, will be all things electric and all things crossover. The show promises to showcase some of the coolest new technology while also displaying a wide assortment of new crossovers and SUVs.
Automakers are scrambling to win new customers in the booming crossover segment that has basically kept the industry above water for the last couple of years. You can also expect some flashy presentations from up-and-coming Chinese manufacturers that will include Chery Automobile Co. and Great Wall Motors. Both automakers are expected to debut crossovers and SUVs for the international market and use the show as a springboard for their global expansion strategy. Great Wall has been in the news lately as a potential buyer for Jeep, but it’s unlikely that Fiat Chrysler will sell their most profitable division.
This year, the show is as much about who won’t be attending. Companies like Fiat Chrysler, Nissan, Volvo, and Mitsubishi have all passed on attending the event as they believe they can get a bigger bang for their buck doing smaller engagements that focus solely on their brand and won’t get lost in the crowd at Frankfurt. Either way, we can expect a showdown between major German automakers and Chinese upstarts that will reveal international products for the first time.
