24. Volkswagen Diesels
You are right to be hesitant to buy a Volkswagen diesel model at the moment given the scandal involving the emissions-cheating software. That said, there is a handful of 2015 VW TDIs that are completely compliant and offer a great option for those who love diesels. At the minimum, there are 12,000 2015 models available, along with the possibility of 67,000 used ones that were bought back and then modified.
In the spring of 2017, Volkswagen was approved to sell certain previously unsold TDI models from 2015. These all have 2-liter 4-cylinder TDI diesel engines. Model options include the Beetle, Jetta, Golf, and Passat. They all include new software that does not cheat the system, delivering you a clean diesel model you can actually trust to emit as little as it says. These models will be getting minor hardware modifications in 2018 to complete the package. That said, the advertised fuel savings are now a lot less than they were before. Drivers will have to way less fuel economy than they expected and Volkswagen’s reputation against the savings from purchasing a refurbished model.
