Audi Launches Tesla Competitor

Looks like our friends at Tesla are in for a bit of challenge now that Audi had announced the planned launch of the new e-Tron GT, a four door car that will rival Tesla’s Model S. Audi said that the new e-Tron GT will be one of the 20 new electric models the manufacturer plans on launching by 2025 and promises that the new e-Tron GT will be a very special kind of car.

The company notes that the e-Tron GT will be the flagship nameplate for the company’s performance division and that a new definition of sportiness will be borne with this line and that the all electric line up will re-define the Audi performance division going forward. The company further noted that it has been able to control some of the costs of its development program as it shares is electric platform with the Porsche ‘Mission E’ and has resulted in significant development savings that come in over “…three digit million Euros…”. The company further announced that all Audi core models will be sold with at least a mild hybrid engine option as it looks to make up ground on the current world leader in electric vehicle sales Nissan. The aggressive push into the electric market comes as no surprise as Audi was on of the worst hit companies throughout the European Diesel scandal that saw may European nation try to completely ban diesel vehicles from their roads once real emission levels were uncovered.

The company also continues to focus on the highly lucrative Chinese market and more specifically the SUV market where Chinese consumers can’t seem to get enough of SUVs. And to prove this point the company noted that the Audi Q line accounted for half of all of Audi sales in the Chinese market and it will be looking to introduce up to 10 new SUVs, or variations of new, specifically for the higher end Chinese market.
