While SUVs have become one of the most popular types of cars, it’s still quite challenging to pick the right one for your needs. In fact, with the market overflowing with latest models lately, it has probably got more confusing than ever to choose the best SUV that comes with pretty much everything you’re looking for and still offers a decent fuel economy.
So despite there being so many options, it’s apparently far from easy to find SUVs that are not only spacious enough to fit six people in, but also offer an impressive fuel efficiency. But as a family car is expected to spend a lot of time on the road, it makes sense to look for the (seemingly) rare combination of family transport and fuel efficiency.
However, if you have almost did your best and didn’t find anything that combined both these top features and still met all your other needs, you may want to take a look at the below given SUVs that seem to be offering pretty much everything you can expect in an ideal family SUV.
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
If you’re looking for the 6-passenger SUV with best gas mileage, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is probably your best bet. While there are some other SUVs that offer a slightly better highway gas mileage, pretty much none of them come close to Highlander Hybrid’s amazing 28 miles per gallon mileage when it comes to driving in the city.
In fact, it gives some of the popular economy cars out there a run for their money on this front, which is saying something as most of the 3-row vehicles out there usually disappoint on the fuel efficiency front.
Furthermore, as you would usually drive in the city if you’re using it as a family car, its impressive gas mileage in the city is surely going to be a great advantage.
However, the downside is that hybrid technology doesn’t come cheap, and you would need to shell out close to $48,000 (at the very least) for the latest version of this beast.
The Mitsubishi Outlander boasts pretty impressive numbers on the fuel economy front as well, with 31 mpg in highway driving and 25 mpg in city. It’s believed to be the second-most fuel efficient SUV after the Highlander Hybrid.
Surprisingly, however, it isn’t priced anywhere near to the Highlander Hybrid, with the latest version (that comes with many improvements) being offered for just around the $24,000 mark.
However, the third seat isn’t spacious enough, so that may be a little disappointing for some. Similarly, some of the advanced features it comes with are available only in the more-expensive models.
The Mazda5 is a compact minivan, coming with dual sliding doors. It boasts a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with around 160 hp, which seems ideal for a family car.
The fuel economy doesn’t disappoint as well, with 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg in highway driving.
However, something that may not impress many is the fact that it only seats six, meaning that it may not turn out to be spacious enough for large families. Similarly, it doesn’t come with many amenities that are common in most SUVs, but you can’t really complain on that front given its impressively affordable price.
With a price of just around $21,000, it seems to be offering a great value for money for small families.
The Ford Explorer actually offers two different models you can choose from, depending on whether you’re a fan of power or fuel economy.
While the 3.5-liter V6 engine offers a tempting 290 hp (and 365 hp in Sport form), the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turns out to be ideal for achieving a great fuel economy of 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway.
Although it may seem that the availability of just four cylinders may not turn out to be enough, it apparently works well in pretty much any situation.
However, finally, all these impressive features don’t come cheap, and hence the Ford Explorer may not really be for you unless you’re willing to shell out a staggering $37,000.
Audi Q7 TDI
If you’re looking for the best 6-passenger luxury SUV that also offers a decent fuel economy, the Audi Q7 TDI may hit the spot for you.
It’s one of the high-end SUVs on the market, and although it comes with a long list of impressive features, it surely isn’t anywhere near to being a budget-friendly SUV.
With that being said, it comes with a perfectly spacious, attractive and quiet interior, and a wide range of other luxury features. It also boasts of cutting-edge technology, meaning you will be offered a wide range of advanced features such as three-zone automatic climate control, different drive modes, cruise control, and the list goes on.
Its 240-hp engine would blow you away too with a whopping 28 mpg in highway driving and 19 mpg in city driving.
However, technology is expensive, and so is the Audi Q7 TDI. It’s priced at upwards of $62,000.
