The demand for cheap used cars seems to be hitting an all-time high as of late, perhaps primarily because of the spiraling petrol and insurance costs.
A good used car helps save quite a bit of money, which, in turn, makes owning an automobile a significantly less costly affair.
So with that being said, let’s find out what are you best options when it comes to used cars under $1,000.
#1 Ford Focus (1998)
If you’re aware of what the automobile market looked like back in 1998, you may surely not need an explanation as to why the Ford Focus topped this list.
It was arguably one of the best family hatchbacks back in 1998. However, more important is the fact that it still doesn’t look outdated, even according to the modern-day standards. The ride quality, too, may turn out to be well beyond your expectations, given the Focus is very fun to ride.
Similarly, you also don’t need to worry about not being able to find parts for the vehicle when they need replacing, as they seem to be available in abundance, which otherwise seems to be an annoyingly common issue with many used cars.
However, what you would want to do is check the full history of the vehicle before making the purchase.
#2 BMW 3-series E36 (1991-1998)
Well, we honestly doubt if a modest grand can get you anything better than the E36 3-series. Surprisingly, there are plenty of them out there, so you don’t need to have to settle for one that doesn’t seem to be reliable enough, which is apparently a common sacrifice many make while looking for cheap used cars.
Also, while there are many options in the 3-series, the 320i Saloon may easily turn out to be the best bet for many, given that it’s very practical and even ideal for long travels.
However, you would still want to avoid the thrashed models or vehicles with a gap in their servicing history. Those are typically the ones that are most likely to turn out to be a struggle to use.
#3 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (2002)
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder comes with a rather rare combination of sporty style and strong performance. While it’s around one and a half decades old model, it still looks surprisingly fresh even when compared to many of the latest subcompacts out there.
This is another one of those few cheap used cars that doesn’t give you a nightmare every time you need to replace a part, thanks to most of its parts being easily available in the market.
Finally, for less than a grand, you surely can’t go wrong with a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder that’s still in a very good condition.
#4 Mazda MX-5 (1989-1997)
It’s really surprising that there are still cars like Mazda MX-5 available for an unbelievably low price of less than $1000. A really unique thing about this little beauty is that it perhaps never went out of style, as it’s simply an icon in the sportscar segment.
Also, as it enjoys a tremendous amount of popularity, you can find one for literally any price. However, when it comes to the lowest price bracket, which is obviously the one we are discussing, it can get really challenging to get one that’s not going to break apart in a month or two.
That being said, checking the service history while going for this one is going to be of utmost important.
#5 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer (2005)
While not many would believe that the Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer, too, is one of the best used cars under $1,000, we have a few things to say that are worth noting.
First, it comes from one of the most reputed automobile brands in the world and is quite reliable, given you find one that’s in a reasonably good condition. Secondly, it’s probably more practical and spacious than you think. The ride quality, too, is simply exceptional for the price, and the same can be said about some of its other features.
#6 Honda Prelude (1992-1996)
The Honda Prelude seems to be one of the rare few all-round options in the cheap used cars segment. It comes with an almost unmatched 2.0-liter or 2.2-liter VTEC engine, and a great combination of safety features and secure handling, which is simply amazing for the price.
The modified versions are what you need to be careful about, though, but you probably can’t go wrong with a well-maintained P-plate 2.0-liter.
#7 Volkswagen Polo (1981-1995)
Well, while the Volkswagen Polo isn’t the perfect vehicle you can find, even for this price, it’s probably still one of the best options for daily driving. The simplicity of its mechanicals is something that makes it one of the most popular cheap used cars out there.
#8 Ford Mondeo (1996-2000)
The Ford Mondeo is especially popular as a used car in some parts of the world, thanks to the healthy sales figures it enjoyed back when it was launched.
The best thing about it is that you can find a very late model for well under $1000, and perhaps even a very early version with great mileage. Finding parts turns out to be a breeze as well, thanks to its huge popularity.
#9 Honda Accord (1999)
While you need to be too lucky to find a Honda Accord in good condition for your modest budget, if you do, it may surely turn out to be the very best you can get for what you’re willing to pay.
It’s a powerful automobile with the engine usually producing between 185 to 278 horsepower. It also comes with a long list of standard features.
Finally, it’s impressive fuel mileage is something worth considering as well, especially given that you’re on a very tight budget here.
#10 Honda Odyssey EX (1996)
If you think you cannot get a larger vehicle for under $1,000, you’re surely mistaken. While there don’t seem to be many Odyssey EXs for sale at that price, you can definitely find one if you put in some efforts and have got a bit of luck on your side.
It’s a four-door minivan and comes with a lot of power, with the 2.2-liter engine capable of producing 130 horsepower. The interior is pretty comfortable, too, and you also get something you shouldn’t really expect in this price range – a fair few useful safety features.
